In the 1970’s, a group of Hispanic citizens experienced difficulties finding translators, interpreters, employment, or medical assistance within its community. They were so concerned for the welfare of other Hispanics in similar situations that they decided to get together and form SCOW. On March of 1972 their dream became a reality and the Communidad Hispana de Wallingford (translated Spanish Community of Wallingford) opened its doors.

The founders envisioned SCOW as the leading agency to help develop and involve the Hispanic community in adapting to mainstream America. Today, that is our mission. Since 1994, we have worked hard to ensure the implementation of our founders’ vision.  SCOW has become a reliable and dependable center for the Hispanic community.  Members are offered extracurricular activities, such as; English as Second Language (ESL), Naturalization preparedness, Computer training and much more. We offer advice on immigration, health, education, employment, legal and other matters. We even provide transportation to appointments (i.e. Social Security office, medical, attorneys, etc.).  It is our belief, that when we help develop and improve our member’s skills and talents not only do they better themselves, but they give back to the community and become role models for their children and their family.

We have seen a chain reaction that has spread like a wild fire.  Members have learned English, have graduated high school by achieving their General Equivalency Diploma (GED), have purchased their first home, opened their first savings accounts, became Naturalized Citizens of the United States and are productive members of society.  We want to congratulate our members for making a difference in their lives and in the community.

Although SCOW has helped achieve greatness in our member’s lives, our work is far from done. We hope to offer new and exciting programs, initiate new events and create a cultural and artist center for our members and the community to enjoy and call their own. SCOW looks forward to continue serving our present and future generation!
