Our History

The Spanish Community of Wallingford (SCOW) was founded in 1972 by a small group of Hispanics in the greater Meriden-Wallingford area who experienced difficulties finding translators, interpreters, employment, and medical assistance. The founders envisioned the Spanish Community of Wallingford (SCOW) to be the leading agency to help develop and support Hispanics in the community.

Through the years, SCOW has been successful in implementing its mission by providing a variety of social, cultural, and educational services and enrichment activities. These allow our clients to successfully integrate  themselves into U.S. society. Our agency supports newcomers from different backgrounds as well as local clients in their transition to becoming full participants in the local community and the country. Every program we offer is designed and implemented to build confidence, enhance skills, and offer educational opportunities. Our programs can be essentially described in three words: guidance, education, and sharing.

Since 1972, SCOW has successfully implemented its mission: “To respond to the needs of the Latino Community by assisting them to succeed in U.S. society, and to enable Latinos to maintain and share their rich, varied cultures with the broader community.” Our vision is to “recognize and support the culture and heritage of Hispanic/Latino individuals and families and other immigrant communities in the Greater Wallingford area by providing valuable services and programs that meet their needs and enable them to become healthy, productive, and successful."
